Homemade Steadycam or Digital Video Stabilizer?

Hello everyone, I am a photographer based in New York always looking to improve my work. I wonder if anyone has used and / or could recommend a software video stabilizer. And if so, does the material put through the software lose any quality? What about Home-Built Steadycams, I have done some research on the web and found quite a few designs that look promising, but so far .. below design looks great. Personally I'm leaning towards using a Steadycam, since obviously they are good material makes editing easier, but again I did not try the video stabilization software. So if you know or have heard of anything better, I love to listen. There is a filter for VirtualDub called Deshaker you could experiment with. I have had good results with it, but is very slow (such as business applications). I agree with you about steadycams still the best option, but sometimes do not have one!
